1. Add new flooring (including carpet). Carpet, in particular, ages very quickly from both a usage standpoint and style standpoint. It’s not that expensive to add new carpeting. Some sellers prefer to add a flooring allowance into their sale, but I recommend adding new flooring, because otherwise sellers can’t picture what the home would look like once this area is updated.
2. Repaint in neutral colors. It’s easy to scuff up the walls of our home over time, but when a potential buyer walks through your home, they want it to look like it did the day you moved into it. Whether you want to try it yourself or hire a professional, repainting your walls will make a huge difference.
3. Declutter and depersonalize. If you watch HGTV at all, you learn quickly that to get a property sold, you need to declutter and organize it. You have to box-up everything anyway, so you might as well get a head start. You can keep everything in a storage room or your garage so people can still walk through the home and see it for what it truly is.
